About Earth Day, And How It Relates To This Contest

Earth Day is a Global Holiday which began in 1970!
This year in 2014, this international celebration which aims to promote awareness, education, and action in order to help preserve and protect our Nature on Earth, falls on Tuesday, April 22nd!

Our Group has been expanding for over a year now, via several types of efforts, in an attempt to reflect that not only do we love and enjoy the beauty of Nature, but that we also care about protecting and preserving it, and would like to seek ways to join with others to do so, and learn about and create better ideas for this!

There are so many environmental issues, which do, in fact, adversely affect Earth, our common home.

Sometimes, it can seem overwhelming, or even sad to think about, however, we are actually NOT helpless!  So many of our Members already know this, and are aware of many of the issues, and engage in helpful activities on some regular basis, which benefit our planet!

After all, maybe one single human being can't affect change, but TOGETHER, we certainly can!

 

Plus, we should realize that Earth Day, is not just some gigantic lecture, but it's is also a CELEBRATION of Earth, and of what Earth provides for us, and has been providing since the beginning of time.

Last year was the first time we correlated our BIG Spring Contest to Earth Day, and it was a HUGE success, HOWEVER we left the "environmental issue" of concern open to each contest participant.

This year, we are going to focus in a bit more on one area... that, of WATER... clean/fresh water, water resources, water conservation, drinking water, the water cycle, and much more...


I have always believed that we, as Artists, can promote positive change, and beneficial messages, through the artwork that we create.  We can use our medium of choice, to be the VOICE of promoting something important-
in this case, be the voice of our planet, through your work of art!



GUIDELINES

Create a single deviation very specifically about or depicting water in some way- it could be something that is about, or shows a waterfall, a river, a lake, the ocean, rain falling, water drops,... or even water in containers of some sort...
for those of us just coming out of cold weather WINTER, or if we are SOUTH of the EQUATOR and it's already getting very cold, water in various frozen forms, is also welcome.

(We may say "Spring Contest" but we are focusing more on the "Earth Day" aspect- and that is truly Universal... )

We are an All-Media group, and therefore ALL Media is welcomed to this Contest, as always in the past, as long as it can depict the theme clearly.
AND such a wide variety of media would truly be EXCELLENT for this Contest, such as, but NOT limited to:

Traditional, for example Drawings, Typography, Paintings, Collages, Etc.
Photography, for example Photojournalism, Conceptual, Fantasy, Surreal,'Scapes, Still Life, Etc.
Literature, for example Poetry, Essays, Visual Poetry, Etc.
Flash, for example Animations, Movies, Etc.
Digital, for example Typography, Photomanipulation, Fractals, Mixed Media, Etc.
Designs & Interafaces & Customizations & Artisan Crafts


It would be especially AWESOME, if the entry had a clear environmental message or statement about it- if not in the entry itself, definitely in your ARTIST COMMENTS.
It does NOT have to be long. Brief is fine- a line or two!!
But given the theme, a beautiful ocean scape, may not be enough... give us a thought about water in terms of "water issues" relating to our planet, and EARTH DAY!

ONE Entry per Group Member.
MUST be a Member to Enter- Feel free to Join!
Starts: Tuesday, April 1st; Ends: Tuesday, May 6th, 2014 midnight, PST: wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time…
[ 5 weeks long! No Extensions ]
Entry MUST be NEW, with a dA submission date of Jan. 1, 2014 and newer. And it can NOT already be submitted to the Group.
ALL-MEDIA welcome as always- see above section of GUIDELINES for details- as long as the THEME is clearly expressed or stated in some obvious way.

REMEMBER: It is IMPORTANT to state it your ARTIST COMMENTS how your entry about or showing water, relates to planetary ISSUES OF WATER, especially if it's not obvious in your the entry itself.
It can be very brief, one or two lines. See Guidelines above...

Judging

There will be a panel of judges from a variety of artistic backgrounds, unrelated to our group- [NON-members].

Judging will take place from: May 8th - May. 16th
Results should hopefully follow by: May 19th.

Judges will vote based the following two main criteria:
1. The QUALITY of your work within your medium of choice.
2. How CLOSELY you are able to follow and express the THEME.
