Special Edition News Article: HAPPY THREE YEAR ANNIVERSARY to "The Shelter Project"!!!
As of just this previous August 2013, "The Shelter Project" is THREE Years Old!
AND... THIS YEAR "THE SHELTER PROJECT" IS CONGRATULATING ITS dA AFFILIATES!!!
"THE SHELTER PROJECT" is NOT one person; it's not BECAUSE OF one person, nor is it, or could it EVER BE successful, because of just one single person. For it to be anything AT ALL, of any of the helpful VALUE that it is, and continues to strive for, it takes A TEAM of VOLUNTEERS, who we have called here on dA, "The dA Affiliates of 'The Shelter Project.'"
EVERYONE is welcome to be here and be a part of the celebration, to learn more about this project and why it continues to be so crucially essential, and find out all about those here on dA who have even made this worthy project and cause, even possible, as something to participate in, right here on deviantART!
Truly the MAIN PURPOSE of this News Article is to give thanks and gratitude to ALL of the exceptionally outstanding AFFILIATES of "The Shelter Project", as THEY are the ones who have made this a possible, REAL successful project through deviantART! While of course, there has been a lot of other support from friends, family, and other customers and promoters who are not a part of the deviantART community, to whom I am also extraordinarily grateful, I can only truly share with you the side of the support that this project has been receiving from those WITH dA Accounts, since THEY are the ones who've developed this as a project here on deviantART project.
Some Personal Background I began volunteering with animal facility groups around January of 2008. First I volunteered with "Last Hope Cat Kingdom" and "Trails of Happy Tails" both were foster groups, who supplied the pets who were ready to PET SMART, a chain store in the USA, the one I worked for was in Merced, California. My main jobs were actually there at Pet Smart, and involved a lot of cleaning, showing of the pets, usually cats, and I was trained in and took care of many adoptions.
Then I went from here, to the county facility, Merced County Animal Services Facility. It was a completely different system to be sure, but I learned a lot! My main jobs were cleaning, cat grooming, cat socializing, and filling out forms if I noticed anything medically suspicious.
It was during my time at this facility that "The Shelter Project" was born, which they appreciated and welcomed! But they preferred actual ITEMS bought WITH the donations, to the actual donation money, because due to their system, their board would have to approve and vote on every cash donation as to where to allocate it, and that kind of donation process simply took longer.
This type of facility here, was again VERY different from the places I worked in the past. The South Coast Humane Society is private, and is completely funded 100% by private donations. There is no state or federal government funding, which makes fundraising so much more of an issue for this kind of animal facility!
This poses a few pros, but also some cons! For just one example, the washers and dryers went out this Spring, and took FOREVER to replace! It was a very expensive project, and the problems that not having these daily and necessary machines, for a few MONTHS, were numerous and burdensome, in a variety of ways... I could go on, and make a list of struggles that our facility has and does encounter... but, I want to keep this mostly positive, but at the same time, make aware of the fact that we deal with many unpleasant realities.
Anyway, Additionally, my volunteer job descriptions, also changed once again! I became their photographer, for the local newspapers, where I take the photos of their cats and dogs on a regular basis, and deliver them raw for the Adoption sections of the local papers- about three all together. I then, edit the photos, to be uploaded for the humane society's petfinder.com and facebook pages.
Additionally, there are plenty of times, that I go in and visit, and socialize with both cats and dogs, help with little things here and there, and of course the gigantic annual fundraiser each year in August: "The Mutt Strutt"... this year the whole event was very successful, including my booth!
It was the first time, that besides taking portraits of dogs, or dogs and their human families, that I also brought greeting cards and jewelry products, and it was all a big hit.
I continue to receive local business from this event.
When you purchase from me, through "The Shelter Project" your donations go to fund many programs, which directly benefit the animals. Just a very few examples of MANY:
Our own TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) Program.
Basic Medicine, and testing kits (Combo tests).
Our vet, who is on site a couple days a week, OR to send animals TO the vet, when it is a lot more serious... as we do not have full vet facilities and equipment.
Our spay, neuter, and chipping programs.
For more info. feel free to contact me.
So, What IS "The Shelter Project"? Includes "The Shelter Project" LINK List
The place on dA, where I have been keeping and updating the most comprehensive information that answers this question best is within my now-second Sub-Gallery, The Shelter Project- Cats and Dogs.
There has been TWO NEW changes to "The Shelter Project" since early Summer:
I've added a jewelry line to "Tea Photography" and the intent of the jewelry pieces are also meant to go toward "The Shelter Project" in the same way as anything and every thing else!
Now, regardless of subject matter, EVERYTHING that is purchased will have the proceeds to go to "The Shelter Project"! Previously, the subject matter had to be of an animal, but now it doesn't, whatsoever. It could be a flower, landscaped, heart-shapes, stars, abstract work, etc., It doesn't matter... I want ALL OF IT, to HELP THE ANIMALS! Don't you??
So, because of the above info., EACH sub-gallery, actually will have some kind of info. about "The Shelter Project" inside.
And let's NOT forget!!! It is NOT too early to think about THE HOLIDAYS!!!! The Shelter Project- Holiday Themed Greeting Cards. I am taking orders for holiday-themed cards to help the shelter animals, starting NOW! If you live abroad from me, deadline for your order is Oct. 31st. If you live in the USA, deadline is Nov. 25th.
More info. can be found on my personal website teaphotography.com, which is just so different from dA is so many ways. First, it's... just more personal, less... crowded? A LOT MORE SIMPLE! It's recently had a lot of work done on it! It's STILL a work in progress, though, and always will be! But I am happy with it, so far, right now. It's been "modernized" which means, for one thing, it is much more "mobile friendly" and can be viewed easier on devices like smart phones, and it is cleaner and simple. I admit we are a bit overwhelmed with the addition of the jewelry line, so for now, that page is simply linking back to dA. It's just best to contact me for further info., until we get a better system. It's just my web designer is a VOLUNTEER and he works 50 hours a week, otherwise, so you know. I am happy with whatever he can do!
There is always an annual "Tea Photography" Newsletter which comes out at the beginning of each Summer, which explains the connection to "The Shelter Project" and what's new with everything. This Summer was the 2nd year, I sent them out as PDF files, via email, due to the cost of the regular postal mail. I can send one to anyone at anytime, upon request.
Basically, "The Shelter Project" officially began during the Summer of 2010, with the very FIRST purchasers, being right here on dA, in the month of August 2010, which is why I count August as the month of the Anniversary.
At the time I lived in the middle of California, and the proceeds went to the Merced County Animal Services Facility where I was volunteering at that time.
I had decided to combine my love and compassion for helping animals in need, with my passion for art, because my own personal situation had changed so drastically, in a financial way, that I was no longer able to also help out these animals in a monetary way, which was upsetting to me, since previously I was able to do this at times, in addition to the time I was volunteering.
I felt desperate, realizing the dire need for such assistance to these animals and to the facilities that were trying to care for them, the best that they could.
And thus was born the idea of "The Shelter Project", creating BOTH Prints and Greeting Cards, that with ANY of my ANIMAL IMAGES ordered, ( ANY and ALL subject matter qualifies!) would be used to donate to and benefit the animal facility or facilities that I was also volunteering with.
One thing I try to be clear about is the fact that while it says 25% of every order is donated, I do not make any profit off of these purchases, because whatever is left, must go back into the list of materials it takes to create the product! Plus, it is NOT the point that I should personally profit.
During approximately the first year of "The Shelter Project" donations went to Merced's county facility, where I volunteered with in California, however we had moved in April of 2011 to the Southern Coastal area of Oregon, where we found a most wonderful humane society: The South Coast Humane Society.
And for these last two years, donations from "The Shelter Project" have been delivered there. For this facility, I save the donations in a separate account, and I donate all of your donations at the same time, in the month of December. This December will be my 4th fiscal year, and the 3rd time donating in this particular way to The South Coast Humane Society.
I will say, that already at THIS point in the year, WE have earned MORE in donations, than ever before in the past, and therefore I really hope that by December, I will be able to present them with your donations, in an amount greater than ever before in the past, and this will be a most wonderful, much appreciated, and needed GIFT!
It is no secret. It shouldn't be. It's your money, and your collective donations! If you ever would like a report of past year totals, or current year- year-to-date totals, feel free to email me, or send a dA Note.
"The Shelter Project" was first introduced inside HERE: regarding the PRINTS that can be purchased of ANY animals from my galleries.
Then came the introductions of the GREETING CARDS: and as they soon after, became available.
The second image of examples, was meant to show, that I do Prints and Greeting Cards of ANY of my images, even if only the animal ones go to this project... as it is very easy to mix and match images.
Then, THIS: my most recent example of my Greeting Cards, was uploaded as a THANK YOU TO ALL AFFILIATES including the future ones!
Then at the end of 2012, a sample of Holiday Greeting cards was introduced, and dedicated to the Affiliates:
And THIS was the first jewelry piece uploaded to introduce The Jewelry Line:
And here was the News Article from "The Two Year Anniversary"!
EVEN IF YOU HAVE JUST 'd ANY of the ABOVE WORK, YOU HAVE HELPED TO SPREAD THE NEWS OF THIS IMPORTANT CAUSE, and IT IS SO MUCH APPRECIATED!
But that brings me to...
Thank You to ALL AWESOME Affiliates!
This has actually been a team effort,
meaning there's no way any of this could have happened, or could continue to be happening, without the following Affiliates!
The Direct Purchasers of dA: The SUPER AFFILIATES!
The following fellow-animal supporters and protectors, who love animals very much, like I do, are the ones who have made purchases on behalf of The Shelter Project, since the project began!
And to be honest, it really is the MOST direct way to help with this project. We simply cannot help these animals in need without donations, and in return you receive artwork crafted from the bottom of my grateful heart for yourself, OR to give to others as GIFTS, to celebrate that YOU have been a HUGE PART of helping these innocent animals.
To date, this is the order of these types of dA Affiliates, ( only purchasers from HERE, on dA ) in which I have received their orders since August of 2010.
The first SIX listed, just below, have made multiple (between 2-8) purchases.
Crista ~cwehaar If she had works on her account, I would LOVE to feature her. She is a very creative person, and talented artist, especially in the area of artisan crafts. I've known Crista since my earliest days of high school, and I am blessed that she has be so supportive of me, in this way!
A Special thanks to Pauline ~kurios-kat for her partnership in a SPECIAL PROJECT, called: "The Shelter ART Project": in which she sponsored the above Artwork that I donated and presented to the Merced County Animal Facility, that was benefiting from The Shelter Project, where I volunteered before I moved. They requested framed works of mine for the walls there. There was some left over for a direct donation, and due to all of this, it is why she is included here!
A Special thanks to Scott ~sukoto-san for his direct help with both "Tea Photography", the business, and "The Shelter Project". He created the site teaphotography.com which opened in OCTOBER of 2010, and he he maintains and updates it, has often as he is able- he works A LOT. I am just very lucky and blessed. He also created this special skin and CSS for the 2nd year anniversary of "The Shelter Project", and simply changed the colour, as I requested, for the 3rd year-
not to mention he works directly and regularly with the animals at The South Coast Humane Society. He is a huge asset to every aspect of everything we aim to do to help these animals.
In addition to the purchases and other special actions, by the above OUTSTANDING and generously helpful people, which have directly benefited animals needing help, most of them have also done a huge number of other sundry things to help support, promote, and continue the existence of what they believe is a worthy project.
Some have promoted the project on their journals and profile pages, often repeatedly or permanently. Some have gone to great lengths in these areas to get the message of suffering animals who are looking for permanent loving homes, across both here on dA, and to society at large. Some have told others about this project in a variety of ways, such through placing the project in their comment taglines, or a couple have donated points on behalf of the project, created videos or other media with The Shelter Project as the subject! I know this list is not complete...
( There are a few special affiliates, who have either de-activated there accounts, OR who have not been active on their accounts for a very long time. First, please know how much you are missed, and that you are not forgotten. You will always be remembered for your support of "The Shelter Project", and once an Affiliate, ALWAYS an Affiliate. )
You do NOT have to be a direct purchaser, to be a valuable affiliate in other important ways!
The above Affiliates have done such a wide variety of things to help support, promote, feature and advertise this project in order to spread the word and continue the existence of what they believe is a worthy project.
Some have promoted the project on their journals and profile pages, often repeatedly or permanently. Some have gone to great lengths in these areas in order to be sure the voice of this project is heard, so that perhaps they'll find others who will be able to directly help these animals. Some have told others about the project in a variety of ways, some have placed the project in their comment taglines, a couple have donated points on behalf of the project, or created some artistic media with The Shelter Project as the subject! I know this list is not complete...
Regarding the donation of dA in the name of "The Shelter Project"... When this first happened, which completely caught me off-guard, though extremely grateful by such generosity, I wasn't sure how I could use the points directly for the project, and I wanted to be able to do that, as closely as possible... so I developed a method of good usage for such points, whereby I give them to good Groups I have found on dA with the attention to TWO facts:
They should be animal-based groups, MOST preferably educationally based, AND usually with folders for animals up for adoption at humane societies, or perhaps other types of rescue or animal rights-based folders, and then of course noticeably collecting points.
Or perhaps, they would be groups, which also are supporting other types of good and worthy causes!
In this way- one of several other ways- The Shelter Project is more than itself, in that, it partners with other similar efforts, both of animal welfare and awareness, and other important positive causes- which the project would also seek to support.
So, I never keep such donated points for myself, for any reason. Again, it is not meant that I should profit from this project.
The above Groups had, in some way found out about "The Shelter Project" and decided on their own to feature the project, in some kind of way, whether in a group journal, or somewhere on the group's profile page... in a few cases, this has been done repeatedly or permanently. Or perhaps official work, or journals were requested or accepted to the group. Even if, the project was only mentioned publicly once, the Group, became an affiliate because of it, and I will always just and appreciate these groups for what they've done in their efforts to spread the word...
... it is much like the individual affiliates, even if the project had been mentioned just once, they became an affiliate of the project... after all, I am always deeply moved by such a precious act of kindness... realizing the potential that this has to help animals!
I am so honestly grateful beyond measure from the very bottom of my heart, for what each and every above affiliate, to date, has done, or has continued to do in their efforts for this project! I never thought there would be this much support in general, but from one internet site, such as wonderful dA!! It really does show the community spirit, that I have always felt is a HUGE positive about dA!
The Affiliates have created themselves, as I never had the idea of it, nor in no way "headed up" such an effort or "group" of sorts- it just happened- but indeed, it is simply what they have become, by virtue of their own actions. It was simply that, the more support that was gathered the more I realized what they were- a Group of Affiliates! And lastly, the earliest Affiliates, are the ones who named the project, "The Shelter Project" as I did not have a name for it... and it simply *STUCK*.
Other NOTEWORTHY INFO.!
Please know I that I support, and will continue to support my friend Sass's 's Operation TNR. Their most recent, very necessary, worthy project: :thumb386109619: PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, or spread the word! Thank you for your attention to this great project!
I recently found something that I wish all people could read and understand when considering to adopt a dog, [or even a cat], or when choosing to keep any domestic animal for a pet. It's by: To My Adoptive Parents by *motherearth01 Absolutely true and wonderful.
I also recently discovered something really great and helpful, for anyone that has ever considered trying to help and donate items for a humane society that is nearest to them. It was compiled and written by: Tips for Humane Society Donations by ~Gothgirl145 If there is ANY way, you can help or donate to a humane society that is close to you, you really should! All animal facilities are in need of some kind of help, at all times, believe me!
You may want to consider asking ahead of time, what they are most in need of at the time, or types of items they DO or do NOT accept, as there are sometimes rules about it.
The PLUS to helping out through a program like "The Shelter Project" is that your donations are going to fund the necessary programs to properly take care of the animals that are brought in and stay in our particular facility. The donations also go toward the medicines and supplies that the vet at the humane society depends so much upon to properly heal the various illnesses which some of the animals come in with, or develop while living there, and for the routine vaccinations and spaying and neutering of ALL animals that come through. The donations go toward whatever they are most in need of.
And of course you get your prints, greeting cards, or jewelry, as a result to commemorate your help!
Plus, not all animal lovers and protectors live near to a humane society, and yet wish to have some way to help!
But if you DO live near one, find out how you can help!
Tutorial on Photographing Shelter Animals
Unfortunately, I never fulfilled a goal, that I mentioned in last year's 2nd year anniversary article. I had been asked by a couple of people about doing a tutorial on specifically photographing Shelter Pets.
I mentioned that I hoped to do so, during 2013, but that TIME, was my biggest challenge, and apparently it truly ended up being so, in a BIG way!
I still would like to do this, at some point, I really would, as I believe it to be a great idea!
There are so many talented artists/photographers here on dA, and even though I have met a couple of people on dA, who photograph animals at certain types of shelters in some capacity, I just honestly believe that with all of this talent right here on this site, it could be another great way to put such talent to great use for a worthy and helpful cause.
I don't know how many times I have heard that it is so important to have good quality photos for the adoption sections of newspapers and for adoption websites, as opposed to quick snap shots with small files, which often are blurry or are too far away, and so on and so forth.
If artists/photographers were to approach humane societies with an offer to volunteer such services, chances are they might be very open to the idea of it, as many do not have professional quality images that they are using to adopt out their pets.
I hope to have more on this to come... someday.
Special Gift Thanks!
These are a few special gifts, made for me, on behalf of "The Shelter Project".
I want to thank my dear sweet friend: `Astrikos for making this wonderful and amazing stamp: Shelter Project Stamp by `Astrikos (I'm sorry, but no more THUMB work is showing up, no matter how hard I try...) It was such a beautiful surprise for me! Please feel free to use it, on dA only! I do- on my front page! She has FULL CREDIT.
I want to thank my friend for making me this "SUPPORT" image for "The Shelter Project" almost two years ago by now: The Shelter Project by ~NanaOsaki88 At the time, I knew she was making me something, but I had no idea the subject would be about the project! I was so moved, beyond words... and I have kept it on my profile page ever since! It belongs here, too!
My dearest friend and HUGE proponent of this project, Teresa created for me this fabulous video specifically to support "The Shelter Project", about a year ago:
I am ever in awe! I keep it and another one she made me, on my profile page, forever, and ever...
The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
I would feature the many gorgeous stamps which I've 'd over the years on dA, which speak to this subject, but the thumbcodes are no longer showing up in this article.
I do want to take a moment to thank EVERY artist here on dA, who has ever made a STAMP, or ANY artwork, or any News Article on this subject!
The benefits of spaying and neutering, are astronomical. So much so, we get to wondering why the practice is still not done as often as it should be. I can't speak for every country, but I can speak from my own experience, and my own country, by saying that there are lots of low-cost spay and neuter clinics, who also will work with you, to make sure it is affordable, because it is recognized that usually vet costs are much higher, though some vets would work with you as well. The thing about adopting from a shelter, at least the ones that I have known of and heard about, is that NO pet leaves without being neutered or spayed, and so it is included in the nominal adoption fee.
Spaying and neutering is beneficial to the animal itself. It prolongs its life, protects against certain illnesses and diseases, and prevents the need to "wander" especially in the male dog or cat, though females also have this need to, if to a lesser extent. And of course wandering, or allowing a domestic animal to wander, only causes further risk and potential harm to the animal. If it is a domestic animal- a pet, in particular, you would want to keep it as close to home as possible, even and most preferably, as an indoor pet, if it is a dog or cat.
Of course, you wouldn't keep a horse IN your house... STILL, it wouldn't be allowed to roam freely, either.
This helps prevent it from befalling the ills of human cruelty, getting hit by cars, becoming trapped accidentally or purposefully by neighbours, becoming harmed in other ways, getting fleas and worms repeatedly, getting even worse illnesses and diseases, and so on.
Additionally, and perhaps, most obviously, spaying and neutering prevents the continuing overpopulation of unwanted animals... and cats have the capability of reproducing more often within a year, than dogs do! There are far more cats than dogs, without homes, and roaming the streets, unwanted, uncared for and with diseases, and no matter how hard animals facilities try, there is no way we can care for them all. As it is, these such facilities are usually, FULL! There are simply NOT enough of them to begin with, they are NOT big enough, and there will never be enough funding to curb this issue from the back end.
More than 15 million dogs and cats are euthanized per year due to overpopulation!
( One EXCELLENT reason to Adopt a Shelter Pet! )
The solution lies BEST, at the root of the problem, which is, with people who are willing to first help, by spaying and neutering their own pets...
and then, of course with people NOT abandoning litters who ARE born, who THEN just keep multiplying out in the world, like you wouldn't believe... and then the problem, becomes "someone else's"... well, maybe, IF the animals are even *that* lucky.
Regardless, the animals suffer greatly, more than anyone could possibly imagine. And YES, animals DO feel pain, exhaustion, hunger, and loneliness. If you think that my believing this, makes me crazy, then I shall sacrifice my sanity in your eyes, to bring this message, which I believe is true, to society.
But I know, that my animal-loving friends, also believe this, and that I'm not totally alone.
I have seen, heard, and FELT (yes, felt), their pain, both on the streets, and in the animal facilities where they've been brought for numerous reasons, not just due to abandonment, but also for very understandable reasons, as well. [Aww]
The more we allow our dogs and cats to multiply, without the means to properly care for them, the more they are at risk for many types of illnesses and disease which spread among them and to others like them, that they come into contact with... This kind of suffering should not be allow to happen, it is too awful, and too sad.
Animal facilities, deal with and see the results of this every day... and the people that work there and volunteer there, are not robots, or even superheroes. They are very human, with real feelings, and they have caring compassionate hearts, (otherwise, why would they be doing that kind of work?)
And to be involved with the realities of animal abandonment, illness, and overpopulation, on a regular basis, is not easy.
On the other hand, it is also why it is important to focus on all the love, and the success stories associated with the involvement of working at an animal facility. [Heart]
"The Shelter Project" is an ongoing project, which actually began right here on dA, just over THREE years ago, in August of 2010.
While there are many others without dA accounts who have supported and do support this project, deviantART is the only official online location, which has served as a HUB, for all people to come and view, and find out what's new with the project, and learn how to participate!
I thank the official dA Affiliates of the project, who have done so much in so many ways, and everyone else, too, who has helped with purchases/donations, and in advertising and spreading the news!
I am very very late in thanking you, Tea! I apologize profusely, my friend. If only I was independently wealthy I could both super support The Shelter Project with a truckload of cash and have the time to cruise DA to my hearts content!
THank you very much for the feature--I am honored to be featured and to support The Shelter Project!
Wow, THREE YEARS already!!! It seems that you just spoke of this project just yesterday..... So many adepts, now, this is so amazing! I am very honored to figure in your lovely feature, Tea Thank you so much
I am always in awe at the beauty of the images created by your favourite contributors and how you showcase them in these journals, in my case as a just not too constant collaborator I feel honoured and thank you for the work of love you always make.
