Katie's Cuddly Christmas by TeaPhotography Katie's Cuddly Christmas by TeaPhotography
Katie Rose is our oldest cat, but she is not our first cat. She is our 3rd cat, after Jikan and Sha-Sha. She was named by my Grandma because she was originally my Grandma's cat. She will be 13 this May of 2011.

My Grandpa got her from a pound in Arizona when she was a 4 month old kitten. No one was interested in her, because she had no tail. They didn't understand that it was her BREED; she is a Manx, and a very beautiful and unique one at that.

She was the apple of my Grandma's eye ever since. My Grandma passed on, not too long after this, but HE adored Katie just as much, actually.

I always told my Grandma that if there ever came a situation where she needed me to take care of Katie, that I promised I would.

That time came sooner than anyone thought, :hmm: as she ended up needing to go to assisted living by January of 2009.

People thought my promise was just talk- I live about 15 hours away by car, but I didn't see why that should matter. A promise was a promise, and Grandma was NOT happy with the other options found for her, and no one else in the family really likes cats so much, besides the two of us.

I called her to reassure her of that promise I'd made a long time ago, and we made a special trip out there to go pick up Katie. While she was so relieved, I know that she has missed Katie very much every day since.

Katie is one of the most unique cats I have EVER met. She is very cuddly on her terms! LOVES to be on your lap, [and on you at night, too!] but don't touch her or move her with your hands or she'll growl.

She's very sweet on the one hand, but having to adjust to living with other cats, has indeed been a HUGE adjustment, and I've been very proud of her progress. I get very defensive of her, especially when the others pick on her, after all SHE is THEIR elder, and that makes me upset. Plus I still really think of her as my Grandma's cat, and I really want to be sure she is treated the best possible.

She's very lovely, and will tell me what she wants, just by "talking" which is very eerie but cool. I love her voice. It's awesome.
She's a wonderful cat, and I really DO wish my Grandma could have a cat still- ANY cat, since she loves them so much like I do, and I have so many.

For an older cat, she has remarkably healthy teeth and other senses, too, - such as she knows exactly what I tell her, when I tell her to go to a certain room or go get something or to come here, and this is beyond hearing! Very intelligent! :omg:

Guess what Katie thinks she sees...

Awwww!!

We're raising my grandmama's cat. She died in 07, and since my mom is her only child, we got the cat. We love him, and I had wanted another cat. I wish we hadn't gotten him the way we had; I wish she'd just decided she was too old to take care of a cat, and a troublemaker like him at that. But she was from the South, so, yeah, not happening.

I completely understand what you mean...

When I originally offered to take care of my grandma's cat, at the time that I did, it was in the spirit of "in case of ANYTHING that might happen for her" having to go into assisted living or in case of her passing on.

So yes, it was to cover the bases.

And yes, it is good that even though I did end up taking the cat BEFORE my grandma passed on, so that I still also have my grandma in my life, my grandma sure does miss her cat all the time.

I'm glad that you love the cat, and that you wanted another cat.

And even though my grandma has four kids, none of them wanted poor Katie!! :( They don't like cats, and only my grandma and I even like cats, and that's why I had to go 15 hours by car to get Katie, but that is what I promised.

Well, my grandma would have kept her cat to the very end, too.

She still asks my mom if she can come get Katie! :faint:

We cat-lovers are very stubborn like that! :D

Well anyway, I'm glad you have your Grandma's cat and that he is in a loving home.

I guess that's the way life goes. sigh.

I want yet another cat. I'm cat crazy.

I love that cat so much. Always have. He's a little shit but he's my little shit.

Cat-lovers and Southerners. Imagine how cat-loving Southerners are.

Hi Sarah, sometimes we match each other coming on here, I think anyway... I've been off a day and a half, and now I'm just checking again, and you've just left a comment.
And I really appreciate it. How sweet. Things were okay, but I sure slept a lot on xmas day, I don't know why, but sometimes that just happens a lot, excessive sleep. Oh well. I certainly wish YOU the same, as for me the Holidays continue through the New Year and I'm wishing you and even your pets the best in 2011!

Such a beautiful kitty. It was so nice of you to take her in and take care of her. Not many people would do that. My eldest kitty recently passed away. She was 17 and had a similar personality as Katie.

Well, none of the family living near my grandma in the same town would take Katie, and there was one other option there in town and Grandma did not like it- someone she didn't know, with three big dogs and eight cats...

at the time I had two small dogs and two cats, and though I lived 15 hours away by car in the next state, she knew ME very well.

And well to her it was the better option.

Of course NOW including Katie, there are 7 cats, and one dog.

But Grandma still seems okay with everything.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of your own eldest kitty.
It seems it never matters the age... it's NEVER easy, it's so difficult and I'm really sorry about it. :huggle:

great picture! The contrast of the yellowish light in the foreground and the purple in the back gives an interesting touch to it.
It's sad, that your grandma couldn't keep her. My father works at a senior's home, they are not allowed to have pets there, too, but the home itself has a garden, where rabbits and guinea pigs live. I think this is really great, because the people who live there gladly help to take care of the animals, they can relax there and enjoy the time with them.

Thank you for your very nice comment about the colouring!

Yes, I understand about where your father works...
Most homes here, are very much the same way, although I HAVE heard of a very few that DO accept them, but they are very rare.

I like the idea of the garden that the home has where your father works though, very nice! :)

Hi Philippe! :aww:
Well, she didn't have another situation that she liked even near to her. And no one of our family likes cats but the two of us [very sadly], even though they live near to her, and I don't.
So it really was the best scenario, and she was happy that Katie would go to someone who would love her and take care of her.
Thank you Philippe and a very Merry Christmas to you, too! It's still holidays through the New Year as far as I'm concerned and I certainly wish you the best in 2011! :w00t:

She is very cute :)
I hate how little people know about Manx.
When I was younger I had a dictionary and it was a picture one. I showed my friend a picture of the Manx because I heard of them from a book. I told her it was a Manx but, she was like, "It's a cat with no tail." I told her it wasn't but, she insisted on being right I gave up on the fighting but, believed it was a Manx.
Anyways merry Christmas :D

Thank you! And yes, it is very true how very little people know and understand about Manx cats! They don't really have a visible tail persť but either rumpy or stump depending on the size or how many vertebrae there are in their backs, but anyway. Historically, it did start out as a birth defect but they began to breed them just carefully so, into a breed. If they are not careful though, and they are too short of vertebrae of the back they won't be able to walk and they won't survive. It's strange.

They started on the Isl. of Mann in England which is how they got their name of Manx. But you know more about this kind of cat than most, and it's good you tried to educate someone! :w00t:

I know, though. Most people just see a cat with no tail and they don't like it. They really are very special cats.

Merry Christmas to you, too, though even if it just past. But that's okay, the holidays are still going on through New Years! I wish you the best in 2011. :aww:

I meant to say either a "rumpy" or a "stumpy"

Well, that's okay, I had no idea what you knew. :)

I did a lot of research when Katie first came to live with us.

Also Discovery Channel sometimes has Cats 101 on Saturdays, although I haven't seen an episode in a long time, and I think it's cool that they have included Manx before.
