Philippe may be a cat that's completely all sleek black, but he is nothing but light and joy to me!

Like Zorra he is difficult to photograph, and so I am happy when I have a nice one of him!

Philippe was at one of the other places I used to volunteer at, back in California, and he was there for at least six months, possibly more, with no one ever asking about him or showing interest...

He was consistently passed over, time and again... even when I'd get permission to move him to more visible and viable locations... still, nothing.

He was one of the most affectionate cats I'd ever met, since the very beginning, and he has been this way ever since.

I decided to adopt him just before Halloween, a few years ago by now,
just in case he would get adopted because of Halloween.

He gets along the best with everyone!

He does hide when anyone comes over though, which is odd, because he's so outgoing with us, the other cats, and whenever we've had one or two dogs at a time.

He's so black, he's almost blue, and his tail is like a cork screw right at the end!
He looks like a cat out of a Tim Burton movie! He really is both amazing to look at, and he has an amazing personality, too!

I wish black cats were more popular, because even where I now volunteer here in Oregon, it's the same story.
Black cats are passed over more than any other kind, and wait the longest for anyone to adopt them.

Wishing you all much Holiday LIGHT!

Philippe is absolutely beautiful! He reminds me a lot of my own black cat, Juliet, (12 1/2 years old) which we rescued from our local Humane Society many years ago when she was 6 months old. She had been dumped by her owner and had been beaten. She hid and coward in fear of us hurting her when she first came home. She had been so mistreated in her early months of life and deserved to know the finer things in life.

After a great deal of time to gain our trust through feeding and petting, she became a very outgoing cat and has been an excellent mentor for the other cats that would eventually join our home. She is the best hunter we have ever had and specializes in a wide variety of prey; from mice and rats to birds (which upset us a bit) and even garder snakes. She is also the most assertive of all the cats when it comes to confronting dogs and has on many occassions sent some prey-driven dogs in our neighborhood (one being a quick Jack Russell Terrier) packing.

To this day, she is one of the most affectionate cats we have. Yes, she is older and is not as nible as she once was. She hardly hunts anymore in the abiding field and instead stays at home. She is starting to feel the onset of arthiritis and prefers to sleep next to someone (cat or human) and loves to groom her fellow felines. Still, we love her dearly and we have shared many wonderful years together. Hopefully, we will still have more years to come with this remarkable feline.

Sadly, like you mentioned, our Humane Society, and other cat rescues in our area, have many black cats that are in search for homes. Due to the superstition of black cats and perhaps other reasons, they are overlooked and are either spend a long time awaiting a black cat friendly home or are adopted solely for Halloween.

Thank you!
And wow, I really appreciate you sharing your own story about Juliet! Wow, what back-story!

So happy that you all found each other, and that she has been getting the love that she always deserved.

Philippe is probably our best hunter, too... only he is relegated to any insects or mysterious invisible monsters, that we can't see!

But, I know what you mean about the birds being upsetting... we do care for two ferals that live on our back porch, who we had each one spayed and neutered through our humane society here...

because they do successfully hunt birds at times, and it is a bit upsetting, that's true! :aww:

Our oldest one is 14 and a half, but she is a tabby Manx... and does have some trouble getting around, so I know how that is.

I hope you'll still have many years with Juliet, as it is possible, they can live very long!

And yes, it's too bad it's the same with your own humane society...

It's the same reasons everywhere I fear, or also simply because to some, they appear to be the "plainest" and yet, I don't think of them as plain at all!

Thanks so much for sharing, much appreciated.

You're welcome! I am glad to share the stories of how I was united with my pets. Even the stories about me receiving my hermit crabs and my Betta fish give me joy.

I am so glad too. It has been great having her in our lives.

lol That's awesome! XD

That's very kind of you in taking care of feral cats. Fortunately, we do not have many in our neighborhood. People seem to take fairly good care of their cats. In fact, the only one that we have really seen was an orange male tabby that had a broken tail. I actually think Juliet befriended him and pretty much brought him home one day. He was too scared to have us come near him. So we fed him everyday and gradually, he began to trust us. Sadly, one morning he came to our doorstep with half of his tail gone. It was a bloody mess and we didn't want him to die of an infection. So we took him in to the vet, got him healed up, neutered, and he became a member of the family. He's one of our other cats, Oranges.

I hope I have some more years with her as well. I hope that is the same for you and your Manx. I'm sorry to hear she's having a hard time moving around.

Indeed. I agree completely.

You're welcome! It's my pleasure. ^_^

Aww, your other types of pets, too....

Oh, what a story about Oranges! My goodness, good thing you got him fixed up and then took him in!

We have one orange cat, and she has one eye... :aww:

She's such a character, and not afraid of a thing.

Yes, when we first moved here, the neighbourhood was rampant with ferals and stray cats, and their kittens... oh the stories we have with "cleaning up" by fostering the kittens, and taking them into the humane society for adoption... having them give birth in our storage building...

oh my... on and on, actually.

And so we just have these two ferals left! :faint:

But, we came from a place that was similar, but because I lived in a condo there, the board was strict with rules about interacting with any ferals or strays! :(

But when we moved, we could help, as it's a bit more rural, though the problems are the same.

Cats are not as valued as dogs, in my experience, but not me personally, of course! :D

Yes. :) I share my life with dogs, cats, hermit crabs, and a Betta fish. I've also had chickens, goldfish, and a rabbit throughout my childhood. I have been blessed to live in a rural environment which supports all kinds of animals. You see, I used to live with my grandparents when my mom was a single mom who couldn't find a home for my she, my sister, and I. They were kind enough to let us live with them and even when Mom found a place for us to live, I still lived part time with my grandparents. To this day, I still do. In fact, that is how we are able to have as many animals as we do. Fortunately, both my grandparents and my mom love animals. The dogs primarily live at my grandmother's but they also come up to our home. Our cats, Vincent and Atticus, also live with her along with my Betta fish, Orpheus. The hermit crabs, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and our other cats, Juliet, Oranges, Candy, Sophie, and Jeanie live with my mom. ^_^ I have been yet to own farm animals (goats, sheep, cows, horses, llamas, alpacas etc.) simply because while I live in a rural environment, we do not have enough acreage to keep such animals. Not to mention the cost to keep them in food and medical treatment. I would like to have a small herd of goats one day, especially since I have Collie mixes. It would be a lot of fun to teach them how to herd and I have always loved goats. For now though, I am content and it is a future dream.

I am so glad we were able to take him into our home. He's a dear little kitty and, like Juliet, is getting up in age. He's nine years old and I forgot to mention, was born with a deformed back foot. He has only three pads on the deformed foot and has always given him a gimpy gait. I believe that someone had hurt him when he was little because his cognition hasn't always been the best and his tail (before it was ripped off) was broken. In fact, I think his tail was either hacked off by someone, or it got caught in a car. Due to all of this mistreatment, Oranges has been known to get cat acne on his face. After consulting with our veterinarian, we deduced that his acne breakouts were due to stress. That would make perfect sense considering the Hell he went through in his first 6 months of life (we adopted him when he was 6 months old btw). While we try very hard to eliminate the stress in his life, Oranges still has breakouts from time to time. The biggest trigger of his anxiety is due to his fear of dogs. Our dogs are fine with him, but we have many bully breed dogs on our block that have chased him and, in some instances, killed neighborhood cats. The most recent, (while not a bully breed) a crazed Jack Russell Terrier that was visiting. Boy, did I have a bone to pick with the owner. While I get upset with the dogs, I cannot really blame them. Rather I blame their idiot owners for buying/adopting dogs that they have no business in having. They know nothing of the breed and they cannot give them the proper guidance, exercise, and training to help alleviate their prey drive. :X

Due to his stressful upbringings, Oranges has always been very timid. He is scared of people who come to visit and will hide. Despite that, he has been able to open up to us and is a very loving little kitty. He just loves to sit on one of our laps on a cold winter's day, watch TV, and to be pet.

I have seen photos of your little orange cat. She is gorgeous and I am so glad you have her in your life. Not too many people take in special needs pets and when they do, most often do not know how to meet their needs. I am also glad to know that her disability does not weigh her down! :aww:

My, oh my. I applaud you for all the work you have done for feral cats!

*sigh* I hate it when such regulations are in place.

Yes, in the rural environments, that tends to happen. :(

I completely agree. Cats are not as valued as dogs according to many people. That's why we have so many cats in the world. People just don't care if their cats help contribute to the homeless pet population through overpopulating, being dumped, and being feral. Sadly, this results in more unwanted pets, homeless pets, and victims of cars, poisoning, shooting, and other despicable things. The truth is that cats and dogs are equally important and valued members of the family. I love them both dearly and I greatly value both of these creatures.

When I was growing up, I wanted a lot of different kinds of animals,
but we lived in a more urban area. We always had fish and dogs and that's it.

I would have loved to have cats, but neither my parents nor my brother liked cats, and I was mistakenly raised to believe that dogs and cats can't live together anyway.

It is why I have had cats so late in life.

Better late than never! ;)

Aw, poor Oranges! He's been through a lot it seems!
I'm glad he has you, to love him.

Yes, I know it was too bad that the condo had these regulations...
some people would feed them anyway, and try to take them in...

but we always had indoor cats and it never worked well trying to help the outdoor ones, despite the rules.

Finally out from under an association!

AND living more rurally, which I love.

I actually wish I could have a horse, but I don't think that will happen.
:aww:

You are exactly right in your examples of how cats are not valued as much as dogs, in general... and those are all things that prove it.

I love them equally, too, like you.

Oh, my. That's a real shame. I'm just glad you are able to enjoy felines now. It is so true! Better late than never! :)

He has gone through a lot, but he's very fortunate to have a home like ours. We love him dearly and hope for more years of his companionship.

I see. At least there were efforts to assist these feral cats.

Who knows? You may be able to have a horse someday. ^_^

That's great to hear that someone else loves cats and dogs equally. So often you find people who favor one over the other.

Je t'adore, Philippe. His facial expression is so ... what you would expect from a child of Bastet. Sometimes I wonder whether cats still know that they once have been seen as god-like creatures. You could get the impression ...
