Abby, Our Foster Survivor

Description

Dedicated to my very good friend Jocelyne :iconjocelyner: for lots of reasons...
she's been lots on my mind, she has always been supportive of all I do, and she is so lovely to so many people. I just want to send her a SMILE. :D

This is Abby. I named her after Abby Sciuto of NCIS.
Why? Well, for one reason... Abby is my favourite character on the show...
[though I like them all...] but as far as the cat goes, because Abby the cat, also likes to wear black, as you can see...
and she's tough like Abby Scuito, and yet sensitive! ;)

Technically Abby is a cat we are fostering... we have been fostering her since the end of April.
She was likely born on March 1st. She was found and brought into the humane society, all by herself, separate from the mother and the rest of the litter and nearly dead. :hmm:

There were several other actual litters at the time, and litters about to be born, as well.
They tried her by herself, but she wasn't thriving... they tried her in with different litters, but they were outgrowing her, and she couldn't compete for food--

She needed to be syringe-fed, as she wouldn't eat on her own at all, but there was not the man-power available in either staff or volunteers to do it, especially considering the HUGE volume of other problems going on at the time- especially related to sick pregnant mother cats, and sick litters being born, and not enough help at all...

We have fostered in the past, since moving here. However, we have done it in our nice storage building which we usually have time to clean, re-arrange, and vaccuum out.

It got to the point, where suddenly there was no time for that, with Abby, and our storage building was not available, and there was no one available to give her the care she needed, for a chance to survive.

So for the first time, I took a cat/kitten directly into my home, within the fold of my established cat family. Half of my art studio was converted into a little nursery.

She had all kinds of problems... severely underweight, malnourished, not eating on her own, and anal prolapse, ... it was round the clock care!

There were plenty of days we thought she would not make it- it was that kind of roller coaster.
But finally on one of the up days, she stayed up and kept going up!!

It's gotten better, and easier ever since-- and it's amazing how much she's grown and changed, already and finally at the same time!

It's a relief... and

The truth is, after all we've been through, and the fact, it was all done so personally within my home, amid my own family, she's going to stay.

I knew from the start, this was likely to happen- as it is why I have never fostered directly in my home- it's hard enough from the storage building.

I am not really "built" to foster... but some people are, and I have talked to the director about fostering more fosterers in our area!! We need them badly, cause I honestly can't do anymore in this particular way, of fostering or adopting!

But we love our Abby!!!

Jocelyne is one of the loveliest people ever!
