Abby, Our Foster Survivor by TeaPhotography Abby, Our Foster Survivor by TeaPhotography
Dedicated to my very good friend Jocelyne :iconjocelyner: for lots of reasons...
she's been lots on my mind, she has always been supportive of all I do, and she is so lovely to so many people. I just want to send her a SMILE. :D

This is Abby. I named her after Abby Sciuto of NCIS.
Why? Well, for one reason... Abby is my favourite character on the show...
[though I like them all...] but as far as the cat goes, because Abby the cat, also likes to wear black, as you can see...
and she's tough like Abby Scuito, and yet sensitive! ;)

Technically Abby is a cat we are fostering... we have been fostering her since the end of April.
She was likely born on March 1st. She was found and brought into the humane society, all by herself, separate from the mother and the rest of the litter and nearly dead. :hmm:

There were several other actual litters at the time, and litters about to be born, as well.
They tried her by herself, but she wasn't thriving... they tried her in with different litters, but they were outgrowing her, and she couldn't compete for food--

She needed to be syringe-fed, as she wouldn't eat on her own at all, but there was not the man-power available in either staff or volunteers to do it, especially considering the HUGE volume of other problems going on at the time- especially related to sick pregnant mother cats, and sick litters being born, and not enough help at all...

We have fostered in the past, since moving here. However, we have done it in our nice storage building which we usually have time to clean, re-arrange, and vaccuum out.

It got to the point, where suddenly there was no time for that, with Abby, and our storage building was not available, and there was no one available to give her the care she needed, for a chance to survive.

So for the first time, I took a cat/kitten directly into my home, within the fold of my established cat family. Half of my art studio was converted into a little nursery.

She had all kinds of problems... severely underweight, malnourished, not eating on her own, and anal prolapse, ... it was round the clock care!

There were plenty of days we thought she would not make it- it was that kind of roller coaster.
But finally on one of the up days, she stayed up and kept going up!!

It's gotten better, and easier ever since-- and it's amazing how much she's grown and changed, already and finally at the same time!

It's a relief... and

The truth is, after all we've been through, and the fact, it was all done so personally within my home, amid my own family, she's going to stay.

I knew from the start, this was likely to happen- as it is why I have never fostered directly in my home- it's hard enough from the storage building.

I am not really "built" to foster... but some people are, and I have talked to the director about fostering more fosterers in our area!! We need them badly, cause I honestly can't do anymore in this particular way, of fostering or adopting!

But we love our Abby!!!

Jocelyne is one of the loveliest people ever!

I understand if you don't have time to comment, but thank you for any kind comments, too. :aww:
It's important to know this NOW, as I may NOT be able to do individual thank-you's for :+fav:'s, or in case I cannot respond to each comment, either. Thanks for understanding. :thanks:

What an amazing thing you have done and I hope that Abby is continuing to thrive. Yes it was bound to happen: you cannot bring an animal through so much and not grow to love them. I'm sure Abby has fallen on her little paws!! :D

Precious little baby!  You have so much love, taking in this little kitten who needed so much attention.  We have a calico, she's the momma cat of my cat.  My bf's Dad's cat.  We just found out she has cancer :(  It was so hard to see Randy cry.  She had a growth under her tongue, which they did surgery on.  He's been feeding her canned chicken and tuna because the hard food is too hard for her.  She seems to be doing well with it.  Since she normally throws up her food.  She has done this for many years.  She is a small and frail looking cat, but she is very vigorous and acts young when she is outside.  I think she is older than Randy thinks she is.  He says she is only 2 years older than our cat, but he got her as a stray (she adopted him!).  So he cannot for certain say how old she is.

She doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort right now, but she is sleeping more.  But she is still on her meds after the surgery.  I think she has one more dose.  He doesn't want her to suffer.  He has had cats who had cancer before and says it is very heartbreaking.

She is, yes! Aww, and thank you... yes, well... is sort of what we've been doing for a while now, kind of part of what we do, with the volunteer work, and The Shelter Project, the whole gamut... :huggle:
One of our other (of many) cats, is also a calico, named Zorra!

Oh my... Gillian! That is awful what your little Calico has been through... :( :(

My goodness, but it sounds like she is a fighter for sure!

Sometimes the smallest cats are the feistiest, most scrappiest!

For our petite cats, (which also includes Zorra) we say about them:
"Though She Be Little, She Be Fierce!" ;)

I am very happy to hear that it seems she is not in pain or discomfort anymore...I am hoping the surgery has helped!
She is about done with her meds, and I hope she will be okay now!
Keep me posted and I would like to know her name.

It is always heartbreaking to watch our dear pet family-members suffer with terrible illnesses.

Thanks.  She seems better lately.  Though I notice she seems grumpier or more skittish.  She's always been Randy's cat and not very social towards us.  But she is shying away from being pet or looking startled at me for being in her space.  I try not to bother her.  :)  And keep my six year old from annoying her too!  He knows that she was recovering from surgery, but I had to remind him that cancer is not like a regular being sick.  And that she could get better or worse very quickly.

Hi Sarah,
I am happy for your comment. So glad you liked Abby's story.
Your comment made me feel so good, though they always do... have never known how you do that! Comments are not my strong suit.

But anyway, I am kind of an idealist.. thinking that we are all capable of kindness and sharing kindness- but that we all just go about doing so in different ways.

such a cutie. Is she a norwegian/mainie mix ? They are darlings, especially the "lucky cats".
And lucky she is, indeed.

They are darlings for sure...
I do not know for sure about that...
found something funny on the internet about how similar those two breeds actually are.. to the point of actually being the same.. it was hilarious!

Anyway we just call her a medium-haired torti for now. :D

And lucky, we are lucky that she survived, too, though. :aww:

Thanks, by the way. :)

Mainies and Norwegians are virtually the same breed, came perhaps with sailors from Scandinavia to to Maine.
There is also a Siberian variation, Neva Masquerade.
I thought, she might be European Shorthair/Mainie or Norwegian mix, could also be spontaneous mutation longhair,
it#s quite common.
All the best for you two and many happy hours together!

Abby is really beautiful! I couldn't foster either because it would be too hard to let go. You have done so much to help her and I'm so glad she is doing much better! You really have a "magic touch" with kittens and other animals too! :iconheartcatplz:

She really is a wonderful looking muted torti, and those green eyes!
Oh you are so right!
I knew the moment we were having to bring her INTO the house, that it was just over...
As it has always been difficult enough to do fostering out of our storage building... always very upsetting when it was time to take them to the humane society. :hmm:
It is why I knew that right within my home and amongst my established cat family [with Daisy dog, as their "protector"] that I wouldn't be able to put in all of that time and effort, to just give her away to someone looking for a healthy cat.
:faint:
I know you understand...

I appreciate your kind words... not sure if I do have that touch, I just try my best to do what is needed, and hope much for the best!

My goodness, Tea, this gorgeous picture for me? Awe!
What amazes me is when I went to my Messages page, I saw this adorable little face on top of the FIRST stack of deviations, it was from a cat's group. I clicked on it of course and saw the other photos you had submitted to this group.
Then I just came to this little cutie and just saw it was dedicated to me!
My sweet Tea, you are warming up my heart with this picture of little Abby, I am so pleased that you dedicated it to me, that you thought of me! :iconlovehug:
I read the story of this kitty, I already knew you were having one and you were not sure that she would make it. You saved her, thank God! :aww:
Do you know that, when I got my new kittens, they refused to eat and to drink the day after they came to my home? Diagnosed with a rhino-tracheitis, the couldn't breathe by the nose, nor swallow because their throat was so painful. I fed them with a syringe during four long weeks, water, milk, food. They were so thin! And they were in quarantine for one month and a half.
It is looking a little like the story of little Abby.
Aww! I am so glad that she made it! And now you are dedicating her beautiful photo to me! :iconchrii:

Thank you so, so very much, my dear Tea, you are such a heartfelt friend, thank you for this big smile you put on my face!  I LOVE your Abby!

Oh, my dearest Jocelyne, I am happy you like this photo of our Abby!
I knew my first upload of her would be for you... and yes the biggest reason, this one, is I remembered what you went through with your two new kittens. :hmm: I know how much it is a lot of work, but you got them through that difficult time!
:huggle:
For us, it was the same... though she also had "anal prolapse" and therefore much trouble at the other end, too.

Yes, much work but worth it.

I didn't want to tell anyone about this, until the "worst" was over, and I felt that she was going to be okay-- it is because it would have been too hard to talk about it.

Now she is almost as big as our other new cat. The one that is so small, for an adult cat!

They are so sweet and cute together, playing all the time. They needed each other, since they are both new to our family, and our other cats being here a long time, take longer to adjust to them. :aww:

Anyway, of course I thought of you, for this, and for every day I am thinking of you!
You are my dear friend... :huggle:

I have things to tell you, if i ever get the chance to make some time. :faint: ;)

Hello there! :aww:

We have actually found out already that it IS difficult to not take in too many...

Since February of 2008, I began my rescue and volunteer work...
it started with two foster care groups in the middle of California...
then a country run animal facility after that..
then we moved to Oregon, where immediately I sought out what they had here...
which is a humane society run solely by private donations (501C3)...
so another very different system...
Prior to moving to Oregon though, my volunteer work, revolved mostly around cat care, i.e. grooming by brushing, cutting out knotted fur, clipping nails...
but when I came here, I they already had that covered, and immediately I became their photographer for photographing their cats and dogs for the adoption sections of a few area news papers, and their FB websites and their petfinder.com website.

Meanwhile, all this time, no matter what I was doing as far as volunteering, "The Shelter Project" came with me, my own "offshoot" of my Tea Photography business, which goes to support the animals in need that I work with, wherever I've lived.

For example here, at the private humane society, they try to keep up their TNR program, and that needs a lot of funding- along with everything else... so I continue to donate from my proceeds of The Shelter Project to our humane society here, to help with their programs and other many needs...

So, are the ferals contained somehow at the villa?
How many are there at one time?
Where is it located? (just the state is fine, if you even want to say that much. :aww: )

Anyway, great to meet you! :handshake:
